About the destination
Two million years ago a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself, creating the world's largest intact caldera. Today its grass-and-soda-lake floor holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere on Earth — and the most reliable place in Tanzania to find black rhino.
Why visit
A single morning on the crater floor delivers what other parks take days to show: lion prides, hippo pools, hyenas, jackals, thousands of zebra and wildebeest, flamingo flocks on Lake Magadi and a real chance at the black rhino. UNESCO-listed and unforgettable.
Wildlife & landscape
- Black rhino (the prize)
- Big-maned crater lions
- Hippos, elephants & buffalo
- Spotted hyena clans
- Greater & lesser flamingo on the soda lake
